Derek Wright's study The Novels of Nuruddin Farah is the first book to be written on the work of this fascinating writer from Somalia (see WLT 68:1, p. 63). It is organized along fairly typical lines for a first book on a writer, with an introductory chapter followed by chapters on each of Farah's seven published novels. The treatment of each novel combines plot summary and thematic analysis with a discussion of the novel's historical context, a summary of criticism where relevant, and some evaluative commentary. The book concludes with a bibliography comprising a listing of all of Farah's own writings and a compilation which usefully lists all secondary works on Farah plus a sampling of relevant scholarship on Somalia but rather confusingly puts both these together as "Other Work."
